Inbox
The Inbox holds everything waiting to go into your wiki: notes you type, web pages, files and images. When you select Process, a curator reads each item and files it as a new article, adds it to an article you already have, or files it as a receipt. Everything in the Inbox is encrypted, and only the members of your space can see it.
To open it, select Grow Brains on your dashboard. The page is headed Brain Inbox.
The page opens with the box for adding a note. Under it, Links and Files are closed, and so is the list of items, headed with how many there are, such as 3 items. Select a heading to open or close its box. Each box stays as you left it until you close the browser tab.
Add a note
- Type a Title.
- Type or paste the note in Text.
- Type a Category hint if you want one, such as “Recipes”. The curator reads it when choosing a category.
- Leave Keep the original ticked to keep your exact words with the entry, as its source. Untick it for something you already have elsewhere, such as a document you pasted in.
- Select Add to Inbox.
Keep the original starts ticked, unless the site keeps no original text. You see “Added to the Inbox.” The note is listed under the items, and their heading counts it.
Save a link
- Open Links.
- Type or paste the web address.
- Select Add to Inbox.
Brain Supply reads the page and saves its text, with the address. If the page can’t be read, the address is still saved, with a message saying why. Select Try Again to read it again later.
Add a file
- Open Files.
- Choose a Markdown, text, PDF or saved web page file, or an image, up to 20 MB. On a phone you can take a photo instead.
- Select Upload to Inbox.
A saved web page is turned into text. Its pictures are left out, because a browser can’t send the folder they’re kept in. An image can be JPEG, PNG, WebP or HEIC. The curator reads it, and the article can show it.
Process items
Open the list of items first: select its heading, such as 3 items.
- To curate one item, select Process on its row.
- To curate everything that’s waiting, select Process Inbox at the bottom of the page.
Each item shows its progress, and what happened is listed above the buttons at the bottom, such as “Filed “Bread notes”.” or “Merged “Bread notes” into its article.” When nothing is left, you see “Nothing else is waiting.”
To see what curating has cost and what failed, select Log at the bottom of the page: see Curating log.
Process uses the site’s own AI. What’s private says what it sends, and where. To compare what different curators would make of an item first, see Process and Compare.
Review a change to an article you edited
If an item would change an article you’ve edited yourself, it isn’t filed straight away. It waits under Waiting for you at the top of the Inbox, and the article shows a notice.
- Under Waiting for you, select Review.
- Read the article’s text now, with the change marked: added words are underlined and removed words are struck through.
- Choose one:
- Accept adds the change to the article.
- File as New Article files the item as an article of its own, and leaves yours as it is.
- Discard files nothing. The item waits in the Inbox again.
You’re back on the Inbox, with a message saying what happened.
Edit an item
- Open the list of items, then select the item’s row.
- Change the Title, and the text under it. What the text is depends on the item:
- Text, for a note, a file of text, or a copy of a todo or journal entry. Changing a copy doesn’t change the original.
- Page text, for a link: the page as it was read. The address can’t be changed. To use another address, delete the item and save the new link.
- Text, for a PDF: the text read from it. The PDF itself stays as it is.
- Note, for a photo: what the curator should know about it, such as “Tuesday’s planning whiteboard”. The curator reads it with the image.
- For a note, tick or untick Keep the original.
- Select Save.
You’re back on the Brain Inbox and see “Saved.”
If a link couldn’t be read, you can paste the page’s text into Page text yourself. When you select Save, the item waits to be processed like any other.
You can’t edit an item while it’s being curated, while it’s being compared, or while a merge of it waits for your review. The page says which, and links to Compare or Review.
Delete an item
- In the list of items, select Delete on its row.
- Select Delete again to confirm.
The item leaves the Inbox. This can’t be undone.
Send a todo or journal entry to the Inbox
On a todo or a journal entry, select Send to Inbox. You see “Sent to the Inbox.” A copy goes to the Inbox, and the original stays where it is.
Who can do this
Every member of the space. A Global Admin can’t see your Inbox.
If something goes wrong
A message about something you just added shows in the box you added it from, and that box opens.
- “Give it a title and some text.” The Title is empty.
- “Choose a file first.” Choose a file before selecting Upload to Inbox.
- “That file is over 20 MB, the most the Inbox takes.” Choose a smaller file.
- “That kind of file can’t go in the Inbox.” Use a .md, .txt, .pdf or .html file, or a JPEG, PNG, WebP or HEIC image.
- “Type a web address starting with http:// or https://.” Check the address under Links.
- “This link can’t be saved: it points to a private or local address.” Brain Supply only reads public web pages.
- “This link couldn’t be read, so only its address is saved.” The site didn’t answer, or didn’t send a web page. Select Try Again later.
- “The site’s AI isn’t set up yet, so Process can’t run.” An AI you’ve connected can still curate the Inbox: see Connect an AI.
- “The site’s AI couldn’t curate this. It’s kept for Try Again.” Select Try Again.
- “This item is busy now, so it wasn’t saved.” A curator started on it, or a comparison began, while you were editing. Go back to the Brain Inbox and try again when it’s waiting.
